Cellulite Specialist Los Angeles, Celebrity Cellulite

by Dr. Lionel Bissoon

What is celebrity cellulite?

Dr. Bissoon coined this term as well as Functional Cellulite; the two are synonymous. Certain activities (such as bending, twisting, or engaging in physical activity) actually worsen the appearance of cellulite.

Usually, cellulite is assessed in the standing position. This is a very important distinction. There is no definition for cellulite while bending, twisting, turning, and sitting with legs crossed. Because of his prior training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Bissoon realized from his observations that some women's cellulite got worse while doing the above mentioned maneuvers. Once they regained the straight standing position, the visible cellulite disappeared or decreased in severity like an illusion. Thus, he coined the term Functional Cellulite to describe the "function" which resulted in the worsening of the cellulite. Some women can be cellulite free and display evidence of functional cellulite.

While doing a cellulite examination, it is important to evaluate your self for this type of cellulite. This type of cellulite is especially troubling for women sitting crossed legged when wearing shorts, short skirts and swim suits.

This leads us to the Celebrity Cellulite. Starting every summer, the tabloids will print a variety of photographs with celebrities walking, running, sitting and in multiple different positions while relaxing at the beach or just out having fun. The paparazzi will usually photograph female celebrities displaying cellulite during various activities and the media will print these revealing photographs with eye catching labels such as "thunder thighs" and describe the celebrity's imperfections. This is rather unfortunate, since the media is reporting the WRONG information. What they are actually showing is Functional Cellulite. Here is the secret you can use to tell if the cellulite is REAL or not if there is cellulite only on one leg or buttock then it's functional cellulite. There can also be cellulite in the back of one thigh when walking. Look at the other leg, if there is only cellulite on one leg, then it's functional. Sometimes, they may show pictures of dimples in one buttock and not the other if it is only visible on one cheek and the other cheek is totally smooth then it's functional. If you see a picture of someone sitting with the legs cross and you see cottage cheese and dimpling, this is functional cellulite. Don't be too quick to judge, since women with perfect legs will often demonstrate celebrity cellulite/functional with certain maneuvers.

Now don't get the wrong idea that celebrities don't have cellulite. Many do, however, publishing photographs which are deceitful and misleading just to be sensational is inexcusable and harmful to the person in the photograph as well as creates and added amount of paranoia to most women. On the brighter side, this condition is easily treatable.
